    Soochow University–Western University Centre for Synchrotron Radiation Research (SWC) at Soochow University is seeking a highly motivated individual for an exciting postdoctoral fellowship at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) in Hsinchu Taiwan. This position will offer ample opportunity to participate in the research and development of synchrotron capabilities at the Taiwan Photon Source of NSRRC and to conduct collaborative research with members of the SWC and the staff of NSRRC. The position is created to foster collaborative research between SWC and NSRRC. The successful candidate will be under the supervision of Prof. Tsun-Kong Sham and Prof. Xuhui Sun of SWC and will report to Prof. Di-jing Huang, the director of NSRRC or his designates as a regular staff member of the NSRRC.

  • A postdoctoral position in Anatoly Frenkel's research group at Brookhaven National Laboratory

    A postdoctoral position in Anatoly Frenkel's research group at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be available on July 1, 2016. The postdoc will be employed by Yeshiva University in New York City. She or he will be stationed in Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island and utilize XAFS and complementary techniques for studying mechanisms of electrostriction in novel electromechanical materials. Prior experience with in situ XAFS methods and with high energy resolution XAS methods is required.       • EXAFS modeling and interpretation of spectra from catalysts and adsorbents
      • Contribute to the planning and implementation of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments.
      • Ability to assess the quality of XAS data as collected and to identify problems.
      • Generation of XAS data reports using Athena/Artemis include: comparisons of XANES and EXAFS spectra, linear combination fitting of XANES spectra, and EXAFS interpretation of the spectra in terms of metal speciation.
      • Participate in all departmental safety activities and conduct all work with a high degree of attention to safety.
      • Utilize six-sigma tools as necessary to implement project work.

      Basic Candidate Qualifications:

      • PhD in physics, chemistry, and chemical engineering or similar is required.
      • Minimum of 2 year experience with synchrotron beam line operations and data analysis. (This experience can include graduate level work within an academic environment.)

      Additional Candidate Qualifications:

      • Experience in Industrial Catalysis Research or Materials Research setting is considered ideal.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
      • Knowledge of FEFF, x-ray optics, and instrument automation is considered a strong plus.

      ID26 is dedicated to X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. We study the electronic structure and local coordination in systems that are relevant in the applied sciences (materials science, coordination chemistry, (bio)catalysis, mineralogy and geology…). The beamline hosts unique instrumentation for advanced X-ray spectroscopies and thus provides state-of-the-art research possibilities. We also collaborate with many theory groups that develop codes for electronic structure calculations for X-ray spectroscopies. (For further information about the instrument please consult You will be encouraged and supported to develop your own research, which should exploit the exceptional beamline capabilities. You will initiate and participate in collaborative research programmes with universities and research centres.
      You must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related field. Very good skills in instrumentation (e.g. X-ray instrumentation, in-situ cells, spectroscopy instrumentation …) and previous research related to electronic structure analysis are essential.

    • Postdoctoral Position in Studies of Materials in Extreme Environments

      The Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science at Missouri State University has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate position. As a participant in the Center for Energy Frontier Research in Extreme Environments (EFree), the selected candidate will collaborate with Prof. Robert Mayanovic and other scientists in the center to investigate the physical and chemical properties of primarily nanophase materials in extreme environments. The candidate will contribute to studies of materials at the atomic to micrometer scale under extremes of temperature, pressure, and in supercritical aqueous fluids. Extensive use of synchrotron techniques such as x-ray absorption (XAS), x-ray diffraction and x-ray scattering (SAXS) will be used in this line of research. Knowledge of synchrotron x-ray techniques for the measurement and analyses of materials is desired. EFree is a nation-wide DOE-funded center involved in fundamental research on materials in extreme environments that is vital to addressing twenty-first century energy needs. As part of an aggressive R+D program, the ALS has commissioned three ptychographic soft x-ray microscopes capable of spectroscopic and tomographic imaging.
